My 48-Hour Cheat Sheet for Alappuzha: My personal faves.
I’ve put together this little “Can't miss 8” list. It’s basically the "don’t leave without seeing these" spots that really make Alappuzha feel like Alappuzha.
The Can't-Miss 8: My Personal Itinerary
If it’s your first time here or you’ve only got like 48 hours, these are the places that actually live up to the hype. They’re popular for a reason they’re just plain beautiful.
- The Houseboat Odyssey: Okay, you literally cannot come here and not do this. It’s the rule! Whether you stay overnight or just do a few hours, drifting through the big canals while someone cooks you a fresh Kerala lunch (that Pearl Spot fish is life-changing) is just chef's kiss. It’s the most
- Alappuzha Beach & the Old Pier: This is the heart of the town. There’s this old, broken-down sea bridge reaching into the ocean that looks so cool in photos. It’s the best place to just walk around at sunset, grab some spicy mango from a street vendor, and watch the waves.
- The Alappuzha Lighthouse: If you don't mind a bit of a climb, the view from the top is 10/10. It’s this massive red-and-white tower from 1862. You get a 360-degree look at the whole coast on one side and the green city on the other.
- Marari Beach: If the main beach feels a bit too crowded for you, head a little north to Marari. It’s much quieter, full of coconut trees, and has that "chill in a hammock" vibe that everyone needs on vacation.
- Shikara Boat Tours: Think of this as the houseboat’s smaller, cooler cousin. Since they’re smaller, they can go into the tiny, narrow canals where the big boats get stuck. You’ll see people washing clothes, kids playing, and just real life happening right by the water. It’s super peaceful.
- St. Andrews Basilica (Arthunkal): This church is huge and made of granite, and it’s been around since the 1500s. Even if you aren't really into history, the architecture is stunning, and there’s always a nice breeze coming off the sea right there.
- Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple: This place is famous for two things: beautiful old carvings and Palpayasam. It’s a sweet rice pudding they make there, and honestly, people travel from all over just to get a taste of it. It’s a must-try.
- Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: If you’re an early bird, head over to the edge of the lake. You can walk through the trails and see all sorts of migratory birds and maybe even a monitor lizard if you’re lucky. It’s the best way to clear your head in the morning.
